Hey guys
So I've been cold emailing a whole bunch of people from middle market and boutique equity research shops. My email's are simple, I attach a copy of my most recent research report and ask to speak over the phone to listen to some career advice.
All is well, some people get back to me, others do not. The people who do get back to me, we set up a time to talk. I follow standard procedure, pick questions I want to ask them, research their firm, LinkedIn, sector coverage, etc. The day we speak over the phone I start with my elevator pitch but following that I lose control of the conversation. The person will begin to interrogate me as if it were an informal interview and begin a series of questions (mostly behavioral questions). By the end of the call I'll have asked maybe one of the many questions I had intended to ask and they'll tell me to keep in touch or "I'll pass your resume along to HR".
Now I know there are worse things in life, at least I'm getting some "face" time with research analyst. But I was hoping someone from the other side could provide some insight as to why my information sessions turn into interview sessions? Are these hidden or unposted job opportunities that the analyst is screening/considering me for? Or is this just the nature of the game?
All feedback from everyone is appreciated - Thanks!
