Everyone,
I have an ER interview this week and needed your help and advice concerning a few things. But first, let me give you some info on my background.
I majored in finance, passed all 3 levels of the CFA and have 4 years of work experience. The first two years were spent as an analyst at a small investment banking boutique focused on SME and lower-mid market companies. The last two years were spent as a corporate finance analyst at a private company in the waste-to-energy sector. The plan was to grow the company and ultimately take it public. Unfortunately, as is always the case, the plans for the IPO were delayed and the growth timeline didn't quite match my career plans anymore.
I thus decided to re-apply to ER which is a field that has always interested me since graduation. However, I find my candidate profile to be weak. Despite following the financial markets and having a number of active investments (albeit limited), I am having trouble making my experience in the waste-to-energy firm relevant to the field of ER. My strategy was to play on the fact that I was working in a small, entrepreneurial team but had direct access and contact with senior management and participated in high level strategic meetings, which helped me better understand the process of value creation from the point of view of management and shareholders, in addition to all the modelling and typical corporate finance that you would see at a big firm.
What are your thoughts on this? Is this the right approach? Any other ideas that come to mind?
Thanks,
Chimp
