Why do you want to move from the buy-side to the sell-side? Most people make the reverse move. What functions do you use in excel? How many hours a week do you think you use excel? I applied to the job online and received a call from the director of research within a week. I then had an interview with a current associate and then had to perform an excel test.

How did you answer each of these questions (please be specific)?: 
I enjoy doing the research and being able to become an expert on a sector. I also enjoy writing so my passion for the markets combined with my writing skills sets me up nicely for this role. I use excel about 4 hours a day. I know all the basic functions (sumif, average, pivottables). My view on the market is cautious near term but optimistic longer term. I think there are some hurdles that are keeping investors from being confident (trade, US pol, global growth slowing) but if we can resolve some of those issues, the market will benefit.
